As from the 1st July 2005 all dogs & cats entering South Africa need to have been implanted with a microchip for identification. The only exception would be the following countries: Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Lesotho and Swaziland. The import health certificate which would be issued for dogs & cats have been altered to include a clause requiring a microchip number and the location of the microchip. After the 1st July 2005, should the animals be found not to have a microchip, they would be quarantined at the point of entry.
